I recently completed a special quilt project, which I’ve affectionately named the “Get Well Soon” quilt. I was asked to create something special for a child recovering from an illness. The wonderful idea was to have each child draw a block, filling it with heartfelt wishes and colorful images to lift their friend’s spirits. Naturally, I was thrilled to be part of such a meaningful project.
The Process
The first step was gathering the drawings. A special volunteer coordinated the huge task of having classmates, teachers, and friends hand-draw blocks. Armed with fabric markers and a sense of purpose, people poured their hearts into each block. Some drew flowers, rainbows, and smiley faces, while others wrote sweet messages like “Get well soon!” and “We miss you!” Each drawing was unique, reflecting the individuality and love of the young artist who created it. In addition to the encouraging messages, there are nods to Atlanta sports teams: Atlanta United, Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Hawks, and Atlanta Falcons.
Once all the blocks were collected, it was time to turn these precious art pieces into a quilt. I carefully arranged the blocks, considering the aesthetics and the emotional impact of each drawing. I wanted the final quilt to be a harmonious blend of colors and messages, ensuring that every child’s contribution was highlighted.
Quilting with Love
As I began sewing the blocks together, I couldn’t help but feel the warmth and positivity radiating from each one. The vibrant colors and heartfelt messages created a patchwork of love and encouragement. To complement the overall design, I chose a soft, soothing fabric for the backing and a cheerful binding.
Quilting each block was a labor of love. I used a simple yet elegant stitch to ensure the drawings remained the focal point. The result was a stunning quilt, full of personality and warmth, ready to bring comfort to its new owner.
The “Get Well Soon” quilt reminds me why I love quilting. It’s not just about fabric and stitches; it’s about telling stories, preserving memories, and spreading love. This quilt will always hold a special place in my heart, representing the incredible power of community and creativity.
Thank you for joining me on this journey. I hope this story inspires you to create heartfelt projects that bring warmth and joy to those around you. If you’re interested in having a custom quilt made or want to learn more about the process, feel free to reach out.
